New taxi cameras to monitor cabbies’ conduct in Dubai

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on May 20 that surveillance cameras have been installed in about 6,500 taxis out of a total fleet comprising 10,221 cabs to ensure that all taxi drivers comply with professional driving standards.

Adel Shakri, Director of Transportation Systems, at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said, “This will motivate them to observe better standards of behavior and attitudes toward passengers. The footage of these cameras can be retrieved in case of any violation reported during the taxi trips to eliminate any complaints from service beneficiaries.”

The installation of the surveillance cameras is also in line with RTA’s efforts to improve transportation services in Dubai for commuters by providing them secured trips through the use of hi-tech devices.

“The step resonates with RTA’s third Strategic Goal ‘People Happiness’ and fits the needs of the Smart City initiative of the government. Thus, it turns the planned objectives into a reality,” Shakri said.
