In the line of duty: Dubai’s brave firefighters

Although Firefighters’ Day is celebrated on May 4, it’s never too late to recognize the sacrifice and risks of these brave men and women whose service aims to protect human life and property during fire incidents.

A total of three fires hit different Dubai high-rise towers this week. Despite extensive damage to the property, no casualties were reported in the three incidents.

“We have to give 100 percent credit to the Civil Defense here as well as to the fire prevention department. They proof the buildings to check if it is safe or not. We have witnessed multiple fires here but no loss of life,” Khaleej Times quoted Sam Alcock, director of fire engineering consultancy company Tenable Dubai.

Equipped with the latest smart technology, the emirates’ fire and rescue department makes good on its promise to improve service time during fire incidents. With the mandatory installation of Dubai Civil Defense (DCD) 24×7 Direct Alarm System in every private and public-owned buildings in the emirate, the DCD is able to monitor buildings in real time and be notified promptly in cases of emergency.

In line with the goal of becoming the world’s most disabled-friendly cities by 2020, fire rescuers are also being trained on communicating with people with special needs as well as the proper ways to rescue them during fire emergencies.

“We are fully aware about the necessity of teaching fire and rescue men the skills and techniques of effective communication with handicapped people as a pre-step to enable them rendering their rescue services to people with special needs, DCD Director Major General Rashid Thani Al Matrooshi of the DCD said on the department’s website.
