DOJ orders NBI probe into deaths of Ateneo basketball players

The Department of Justice (DOJ) directed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Central Office to form a special task force to conduct a “thorough, comprehensive, and impartial” investigation into the deaths of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

The DOJ said the NBI will determine whether there is sufficient basis to recommend the filing of charges before the department, stressing its commitment to establish the facts and ensure that justice is served.

“As part of its investigation, the NBI will determine whether there is sufficient basis to recommend the filing of charges before the DOJ. The DOJ remains committed to ensuring that the facts are fully established and that justice is served,” the agency said.

In an initial report, local police said the two Ateneo de Manila University basketball players were swimming when they were reportedly carried by strong currents into deeper waters, resulting in their drowning.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) said it is convening a multi-stakeholder sports panel in response to the incident. The body includes the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, the Commission on Higher Education, and the National Youth Commission.

The PSC said the panel will review existing policies, safety protocols, and training practices in athletic programs, with the aim of strengthening safeguards in sports environments.
