Duterte’s Eid message: Foster national unity

President Rodrigo Duterte joined the Filipino Muslim community in the celebration of Eid Al Fitr Sunday as he called on his countrymen to build a society anchored on “love, mutual respect, and understanding” amid challenges.

“May this renewed sense of spiritual accomplishment give you the strength and courage to cultivate our communities. In times when all odds seem stacked against us, it is our willpower and faith that will always see us through,” Duterte said in his message for the Eid.

The President also urged the people to foster national unity by dedicating lives to the betterment of humanity.

“May this special day bring happiness, peace, and prosperity to everyone. Eid Mubarak!” PNA quoted Duterte as saying.

Earlier, the Armed Forces of the Philippines declared an eight-hour humanitarian ceasefire in Marawi City in observance of the Eid.

Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said the “humanitarian ceasefire” aims to show solidarity with the Muslim community.

“It is a sincere gesture which shows respect to the Muslim faith and acknowledges the cultural diversity of our society,” Abella said in a separate statement.
