US President Donald Trump said the United States will begin an effort to help free ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday, amid ongoing tensions in the region.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump described the move as a “humanitarian gesture” aimed at assisting neutral countries affected by the disruption of maritime traffic.
“For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States… we will guide their ships safely out of these restricted waterways,” Trump said.
He did not provide specific details about the operation, including whether the United States Navy would be involved.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, handling a significant portion of global oil shipments. Disruptions in the waterway have raised concerns over energy supply, shipping costs, and broader economic impact.
The planned operation comes as tensions remain high in the region, with shipping traffic severely limited compared to normal levels.
Analysts say any effort to reopen or secure passage through the strait could have immediate implications for global markets and energy prices.
