UAE police use AI to monitor driver behavior, curb road accidents

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates are using artificial intelligence to analyze driver behavior as part of efforts to reduce road accidents, despite the country’s high global ranking in road quality.

The Ministry of Interior said AI-powered monitoring systems are now being used to assess how motorists behave on the road, alongside dedicated platforms that identify accident-prone areas.

Drivers involved in both major and minor incidents are also being tracked and required to undergo structured training programs tailored to their behavioral profiles.

The initiative was disclosed during a session of the Federal National Council, where officials highlighted human behavior as a key challenge in road safety. While the UAE ranks fifth globally in road quality, traffic-related injuries and fatalities remain a concern.

Brigadier Dr. Rashid Sultan Al Khudr said police authorities across the country are using AI tools to evaluate driver risk levels and implement targeted measures to address reckless driving.

Officials also emphasized that improving road safety goes beyond infrastructure, calling for stronger traffic education and broader public engagement from schools and families to media and digital platforms to promote responsible driving.

During the session, FNC member Moza Mohammed Al Shehhi stressed the need to incorporate traffic psychology into policymaking, noting that understanding behavioral and psychological factors is key to reducing accidents.

Meanwhile, Energy and Infrastructure Minister Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei said the UAE continues to design its road systems based on international standards, supported by early adoption of AI technologies, including real-time monitoring and legislation for autonomous vehicles.
