ICC opens microsite for witnesses in Duterte drug war probe

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has launched a microsite allowing witnesses to securely submit information on alleged crimes committed during former President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs.

In a Facebook post, the ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor said it is investigating allegations of crimes against humanity in the Philippines, including killings, torture, and sexual violence, linked to the anti-drug campaign between November 2011 and March 2019.

The Office appealed for direct witnesses to come forward, including members of the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies who were involved in the incidents.

Witnesses are instructed to submit information through the ICC microsite at https://bit.ly/49IfCBj. The call for witnesses was also posted in Visayan and Tagalog.

The development comes as Duterte’s lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman, earlier submitted a joint medical report prepared by the defense’s own experts, asserting that the 80-year-old former president’s health has further deteriorated and warrants his release from detention.

The report was submitted to ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I as an annex to a 12-page filing dated January 9, more than a month after a three-member panel of experts submitted their joint and individual assessments on Duterte’s fitness to stand trial.

Duterte is facing 49 counts of murder and attempted murder in connection with his anti-drug campaign, which officially left 6,200 drug suspects dead during his tenure as Davao City mayor and later as president.
