Senators have reaffirmed their dedication to establish a dedicated budget for the medical treatment of impoverished cancer patients.
According to a Manila Bulletin report, Senate President Migz Zubiri said they eye to initiate an initial fund of P100 million, named in honor of the late Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople, to assist underprivileged cancer patients.
House Speaker Martin Romualdez has also expressed agreement, with plans to increase the initial amount further.
Zubiri noted that he intends to collaborate with Sen. Sonny Angara, the Senate Committee on Finance chair, currently leading discussions on the proposed P5.768-trillion national budget for 2024.
“Sa tingin ko, walang maghihindi dito. Walang pipigil nito sa Senado. Magkakaroon ito ng full support sa aking mga kasamahan,” Zubiri said.
Senator Bong Go also committed to continuously augment the allocation of the Cancer Assistance Fund, particularly in next year’s budget.
A dedicated advocate for the rights of Filipino migrant workers, Ople passed away on August 22. She held the distinction of being the inaugural head of the DMW. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. underscored her unparalleled commitment and extensive service to overseas Filipinos, designating her as his sole consideration for the role.
