17% of motorists in Abu Dhabi ignore stop signs of school buses – survey

About 17 percent of motorists in Abu Dhabi don’t stop when the school buses drop or pick up students, a survey has pointed out.

The poll was conducted by the Security Media Department at Abu Dhabi Police.

Brigadier Muhammad Ali Al Muhairi, Director of the security media department in the driving affairs sector, said not stopping at the “stop” signs on school buses by some drivers is a very reckless behaviour and puts the lives of students at risk.

He urged motorists to adhere to the traffic rules related to school buses asserting that drivers caught violating the rules will be punished.

Al Muhairi said that motorists are supposed to stop in both directions on a two-way road when the ‘stop’ sign has been displayed, He said that the drivers need to stop at a distance of five meters away from the school bus.

Those motorists who ignore the ‘stop’ signs on school buses are fined AED 1,000 and 10 black points are registered against their licenses.

The school bus drivers are also required to display the “stop” signs on the buses while picking up or dropping off students and the penalty for not displaying the sign on a school bus has been kept at AED 500 and six black points. (AW)
