‘Dolomite’ beach spawns tide of reactions anew following heavy rain

The intense, incessant rains lashing Metro Manila and nearby provinces for two days now have spawned tons of trash and water hyacinths washed up along Manila Bay’s controversial “dolomite beach”.

The 500-meter stretch of coastline is filled with artificial sand or crushed dolomite boulders from the Visayas.

Some netizens couldn’t help but share their frustration about the trash at the beach project worth PHP28 million, which was part of the Manila Bay rehabilitation efforts.

On Thursday morning, marshalls and teams from the Manila City hall have started clearing the baywalk shore.

“Milyones na naman nasayang!” a netizen commented.

“Isang malaking nonsense kasi yang Dolomite dyan. Para niyong tinatapon pera ng bayan. Eh kung ipang-fund niyo sa medical facilities na lang no? Or ibili ng bakuna?” another netizen expressed her dismay over the dolomite beach.

“Linis agad , tambak ulit. Don’t panic May budget pa,” another one said.

Some netizens defended the dolomite project saying it’s only natural for garbage to be washed away.

“Siyempre may basura kasi umulan. Edi tatamabakan na lang ulit. Simple! Tambak lang ulit nang tambak ng dolomite. Okay kaya ‘yun sa mental health,” another netizen commenting on the dolomite project.

“Normal lang po ang basura sa karagatan pag may bagyo o ulan kasi tayo din naman ang may kasalanan dyan, simple lang na clean up wala na yan, big deal agad, gobyerno agad sinisisi,” she added

Some experts fear that the dolomite sand dumped on Manila Baywalk would just be swept by the sea during heavy rains or flooding. (TDT)
