India is now facing a new challenge upon the discovery of a new mutation of the more transmissible Delta COVID-19 variant.
The Delta variant was responsible for the biggest coronavirus surge that hit the South Asian country.
Indian health officials label the ‘Delta Plus’ variant as a variant of concern.
Sixteen cases of the variant were found in the state of Maharashtra on Tuesday, according to federal health secretary Rajesh Bhushan.
In a Sky News report, the Delta Plus variant is believed to be more transmissible than the original Delta variant.
The original Delta variant is 60% more transmissible than the UK variant. The variant first detected in India is also set to become the world’s dominating strain.
Initial studies show that some vaccines can be effective against the Delta variant, but additional studies are needed if it will also have the same impact on the Delta Plus variant.
