PGH appeals for help after fire hits hospital

The UP- Philippine General Hospital is asking for help after a fire hit a section of the state-run hospital on the early morning of Sunday.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, the fire broke out on the third floor of the country’s main COVID-19 referral hospital and reached the first alarm at 12:46 am.

In a radio interview with DZBB, PGH spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario said the fire started at the Operating Room Sterilization Area on the third floor of PGH’s central block building.

The fire was put out around 5:41 am according to Manila Fire District 1 with no casualties reported.

Fire trucks and ambulances were dispatched immediately to put out the fire and evacuate patients inside the hospital.

Videos on social media showed doctors and hospital staff rushing patients out of the hospital building.

All hospital trainees are safe and all patients were evacuated, but smoke prevents their return to the wards, ICUs.

Patients were moved to other parts of the hospital while some patients returned to the original areas.

Meanwhile, at least 12 babies from NICU were transferred to the nearby Sta. Ana Hospital and another four at Gat. Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center while two patients were moved to Ospital ng Maynila for appendectomy. (RA)
