Unstable internet connection, parents answering modules for kids: Experts reveal challenges in PH’s distance learning

Education experts revealed various challenges that schools may face in distance learning as the Philippines reopens classes on October 5.

One of those challenges, according to a director of one of Department of Education’s regional offices, is the trip teachers need to do in order to distribute the self-learning modules (SLMs) to their houses of pupils.

“One of the major challenges experienced by the teacher, of course, would be the distance of the houses of these learners and the kind of road that they have to pass through, some have to cross rivers,” Estela Cariño of DepEd’s Cagayan Valley regional office said in a virtual press briefing.

She added that the province is currently coordinating with local officials and authorities to help teachers distribute the SLMs on a quarterly or monthly basis.

Other challenges include learners who do not have parents who can help them study, or parents who are answering the SLMs on behalf of their kids.

Cariño said that schools in the province have already assigned teachers to tutor these kids at home, as well as called on parents to be honest in terms of their children’s classes.

Another predicament faced by many schools, she said, is the poor internet connection—making them unable to conduct this approach in distance learning.

Earlier, DepEd has announced that it will be conducting blending learning in terms of conducting classes for the 2020-2021 academic year. In this approach, schools may choose to do their remote classes among three options—through online classes, modular learning through printed or digital materials, and through broadcasting classes via TV and radio.
