Davao Mayor Sara Duterte blasts wedding attendees, organizers where one guest tested positive for COVID-19

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte reprimanded members of prominent clans in the city after holding a lavish wedding celebration where one guest was confirmed to be positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

She stated that local health authorities have already begun contract tracing measures of all 40 guests who attended the ceremony.

“According to the interview, there were 40 people there but, of course, there were more than 40 because there were suppliers, and the suppliers have employees. All of them have to be contact traced,” said Sara Duterte as per her interview with Davao City Disaster Radio.

Prior to the wedding, the Davao City Mayor already urged wedding organizers not to push through with such huge celebrations, warning that it could be the source of the spread of the COVID-19 infections in the area.

“It’s very common among the rich to think they know everything. Because they have money, they can solve everything. The party happened, and guess what? Someone tested positive, and now we all do this contact tracing when it could have been avoided,” added Sara Duterte.

Sara Duterte then reminded her fellow Dabawenyos to choose not to attend mass gatherings as their way to show empathy particularly for the country’s frontliners who are currently going through a tough period in their fight against the coronavirus.

“I have encountered similar things like that, they were reminded beforehand and yet they pushed through. Later, some of them tested positive. I wanted to tell them, ‘I told you so,’ but I’d rather not. What’s the point of telling them ‘I told you so’ when what we always discuss is the ‘ways forward’ because of your foolishness,” she added as per reports from Minda News.

Authorities state that the City Legal Office is already looking into possible legal actions against attendees of the aforementioned wedding celebration.
