ABS-CBN comedy show under fire due to “offensive”, “racist” skit

Netizens lambasted ABS-CBN’s afternoon comedy show “Banana Sundae” for airing an “offensive” and “racially insensitive” parody of the public spat between incumbent Makati Mayor Abby Binay and brother former Mayor Junjun Binay in the San Ildefonso Parish, April 28.

The parody showed two actors portraying the politicians while wearing black makeup all over their body to exaggerate the Binays’ dark skin tone.

The parody recreated the siblings’ argument giving it a comedic twist.

The siblings’ father, former Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay, was also portrayed in the said parody wearing the same exaggerated black makeup.

After the episode aired, Facebook user Joey Castro Lazaro called out the show for using “blackface” to portray the Binays.

“Blackface” refers to a form of entertainment which originated in the USA wherein white men would wear makeup to darken their skin to create caricatures of black people.

Blackface productions have since been considered offensive and racist as it dehumanize black people “by introducing and reinforcing racial stereotypes.”

“A skit was shown in Banana Sundae with the intent of having a spoof of the Binay incident that happened last week. The show just used black face to portray the Binay siblings including their father, our former Vice President. Dear ABS-CBN, how could you allow such insensitivity to happen? NOT FUNNY AT ALL. #DisappointedButNotSurprised,” Lazaro captioned his post.

His post elicited mixed reactions from netizens saying that the comedy show was just making a joke and people are taking it way too seriously.

However, there were also some who agreed with Lazaro.

“This skit’s sole intention is to mock people with darker skin tone for a few laughs and giggles. I don’t understand how some people could be considered grown *ss adults and still find this funny,” commented a certain Aeron Sumilong.

As of press time, Lazaro’s post has garnered nearly 9,000 reactions and over 7,400 shares on Facebook.
