How did Kpop emerge into the Philippine mainstream entertainment?

Back in the Philippines, after the regular evening news programs – families sit together in front of the television to watch their favorite ‘telenovelas’ from their preferred TV stations, lined up one after the other.

It was with the Pinoy’s love for dubbed telenovelas and soap operas that K-drama managed to penetrate the Philippine mainstream media, with GMA7 leading the Koreanovela storm when they launched ‘Endless Love’ in 2003. Since then major networks have released successful Koreanovelas such as Full House, Stairway to Heaven, Lovers in Paris, Jewel in the Palace, My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Jumong, and more.

Following the success of the Koreanovela, KPop music also went mainstream – and most point it to the hit song ‘Nobody’ by the Wonder Girls back in 2007. What followed many years after is the prevalence of Korean music with hits such as Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’, EXO’s ‘Monster’, BTS’ ‘I Need U’ and most recently, Momoland’s ‘Bboom Bboom’.
