Senator Jinggoy Estrada posted ₱90,000 bail at the Sandiganbayan to secure his temporary liberty in connection with a graft case linked to the alleged flood control controversy.
Estrada arrived at the anti-graft court accompanied by his daughters, Janella and Julienne.
The senator is also facing another graft and plunder case before the Fifth Division of the Sandiganbayan.
Earlier, Estrada’s legal counsel filed an urgent motion seeking to lift the issuance of a warrant of arrest, arguing that the senator had not yet been formally informed of the basis of the criminal charges filed against him.
Atty. Noel Ostrea said the motion was submitted to the Sandiganbayan Second and Fifth Divisions on Tuesday morning, before any arrest warrant was issued.
“We filed it before lunch. We understand this is extraordinary, but we hope the Sandiganbayan justices will understand that our client has yet to receive the Ombudsman and Department of Justice resolutions charging him of these crimes,” Ostrea told reporters.
He said Estrada was asked to respond to the allegations by the Department of Justice, but the complaint did not clearly specify the acts constituting graft and plunder.
“There were no clear-cut allegations that we can refute. They should be able to specify the projects involved here,” Ostrea said.
He added that the documents failed to identify specific instances where Estrada allegedly committed wrongdoing.
The Sandiganbayan has yet to act on the pending motions as proceedings continue on the cases filed against the senator.
