Is Alex Gonzaga poking fun at OFWs in this Instagram post?

Actress Alex Gonzaga is known for her comedic personality and antics. However, one of her jokes did not land and even irked many of her followers.

Alex is currently on vacation in Japan with her mother Crisanta “Pinty” Gonzaga. Alex has been active on social media to share their adventures in places like the famous Universal Studios in Osaka.

One of Alex’s posts, however, is grabbing netizens’ attention because its caption seemed to poke fun at the situation of the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the country.

The photo showed Alex and her mother standing in the rainy street of Osaka with the caption, “Ang sabi nga nila: Japan, Japan sagot sa kahirapan!”

One of her followers named Glysa, said Alex’s caption is offensive for the OFWs in the country.

“I guess you need to rephrase your words here. I don’t get this joke. You have many kababayan here too, I guess it’s [a] good idea you feature [the] life of Filipinos here so you have a bit of emphatic side,” Glysa’s comment read.

Another netizen, Diana, agreed with the earlier comment and said the joke was “made up from total ignorance.”

“I 100 percent agree with this. There are ACTUAL funny jokes and jokes made up from total ignorance. Can mommy Pinty teach her daughter not to be so taklesa and act appropriately? Papansin na kasi kung minsan. OA pa,” Diana’s comment read.

Alex apologized if the joke came across negatively and explained the context of her statement.

“Sorry if that’s how you feel but I’ve been hearing that phrase ever since I was young. Most of the time, Filipinos move overseas to have better opportunities. It’s how you interpret that phrase and the joke is kunwari, we’re moving to Japan na with mommy Pinty. Hehe,” the actress explained.

Some fans came to the defense of the actress.

Noki, an OFW in Japan, said she was not bothered by the joke.

“It’s just a joke. I work in Japan too, it doesn’t bother me. My friends and I went to Japan dahil sa hirap sa Pinas. I think Cathy’s caption didn’t mention negative word about people who work in Japan. Kayo lang naman ang naging nega eh. Chill lang, god bless,” her comment read.
