Before Korean dramas invaded the Philippines, the Filipino pop culture was heavily invested in Mexican telenovelas.
For her portrayal as innocent, good-looking lady with a heart of gold in Mexican telenovelas “Rosalinda” and “Marimar”, Thalia captured the attention of Filipinos in the 90’s.
Labeled by the media as “Queen of Soap Operas,” Thalia visited the country twice in 1996 and 1997, her fans went frenzy treating her like a head of state.
After 18 years of leaving television, Thalia is still having a fruitful career — in music.
Her singing career boasts 13 studio albums, five compilation albums and dozens of hits in the Latin music charts. She even had a Tagalog cover of Ogie Alcasid’s “Nandito Ako”.
Her latest album titled “Latina” is a Gold-certified album and was awarded as the Pop Album of the Year by Lo Nuestro Award in the United States.
Thalia’s music resume also includes hefty number of awards and nominations, including seven Latin Grammy nominations.
But she still hasn’t forget her fans in the Philippines. In 2014, she even posted a prank on Instagram joking about a myth that she removed some of her ribs in order to play the role of Marimar.
“”To all my Filipino fans, I would like to set the record straight about this issue: the chismis is totoo,” she wrote on her Instagram caption before posting her supposed-to-be ribs.
Currently, Thalia is married to music executive Tommy Mottola, the former husband of American diva Mariah Carey, with two children.
