A total of eight Philippine higher education institutions clinched spots in the Top 500 Universities in Asia based on Quacquarelli Symonds 2019 ranking.
The country’s national university, University of the Philippines, leads the roll, rising to 72nd rank from being 75th. UP is the lone Philippine university in the top 100.
It is followed by Ateneo de Manila University in 115th place, De La Salle University in 155th, while University of Santo Tomas is 162nd place.
Cebu-based University of San Carlos maintained its 301-350 bracket, followed by the newly-announced as university, Mapua University, in the 401-450 bracket.
Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology is the newcomer in the top 500, together with Dumaguete’s Silliman University in the 451-500 bracket.
According to GMA News, eleven indicators were considered to come up with QS Asian University Rankings. This includes academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (20%), faculty-student ratio (10%), international research network (10%), citations per paper (10%), papers per faculty (5%), staff with Doctorate degrees (5%), international faculty (2.5%), international students (2.5%), inbound exchange (2.5%), and outbound exchange (2.5%).
Meanwhile, Commission on Higher Education commended the eight universities and is looking forward to more Philippine universities to make it in the top 500 in the next few years.
In an effort to boost the competitiveness of the universities in the country, CHED chairman Prospero de Vera III announced the commission’s project involving international affairs.
“To further boost the quality and competitiveness of our public and private institutions, the Commission will soon launch a project through its International Affairs Service that will assist Philippine universities to showcase their excellence to the world, promote their internationalization initiatives and increase global reputation through international benchmarking assessment of institutions using internationalization metrics,” De Vera said.
