Robredo, Liberal Party mull taking legal action vs. trolls

Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo and her political party, Liberal Party, on Thursday, August 9, announced their plans to take legal action against social media users who spread “malicious” information about them online.

Liberal Party President Francis Pangilinan said that these social media users, also referred to as trolls, should be responsible with their usage of the online platform.

“We respect the right of free speech pero lahat may hangganan so kapag kumilos siya, sana maunawaan ng ating mga kababayan dahil may pananagutan din naman sa pagbibitiw ng mga salita,” Pangilinan said.

Pangilinan also called for the support of other online users to help them in correcting malicious and inaccurate information circulating online.

“Admittedly our resources are not plentiful compared to trolls pero we need to speak up,” Pangilinan said.

Earlier, social media personality Drew Olivar released a video alleging Robredo of having sexual encounters during her trip in South Africa where she attended a women’s conference last year.

“Forty-eight years ka nang nandiyan sa South Africa wala ka pa rin dito. Puro photo op ka parati diyan [expletive] mo,” Olivar says in the video.

“Kahit naririnig ng mga tao wala [akong] pakialam kahit public scandal ito e totoo naman na [expletive] ka lang naman diyan sa South Africa,” he adds.

Robredo’s camp said they are planning to file legal charges against Olivar for his statements.
