A Philippine-registered cargo vessel and a U.S. naval ship collided in Japanese waters Saturday morning leaving one American sailor injured and seven others missing.
The 29,060 tons and 222 meter long container ship ACX Crystal collided with the guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald at around 2:20 a.m. about 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, where a major U.S. Naval base is located.
The collision heavily-damaged the mid-right side of the Fitzgerald and flooded three compartments of the US Navy ship, according to Japan’s Coast Guard and the U.S. 7th Fleet.
The injured sailor was evacuated from the ship by helicopter.
The naval ship headed to Yokosuka while the cargo ship sailed toward Tokyo after the collision, which is now being investigated by Japanese authorities.
