The Commission on Elections confirmed that there was a data leak in Smartmatic system but the poll body insists that it is not related to the upcoming elections

“They emphasized to us that the data leak does not have anything to do with the elections in 2022,” Comelec Chairman Saidamen Pangarungan said in a media briefing.

Smartmatic is the provider of the automated elections system and vote-counting machine for the 2022 polls.

The alleged security breach only involved internal affairs within Smartmatic and the employee involved has been fired.

Comelec adds that the security of the ballots, as well as the configured SD (secure digital) card, was not compromised by the leakage.

The poll body will also wait for the report of the National Bureau of Investigation or NBI regarding the incident.

“We have asked our Law Department to submit to us all possible actions we will pick on this breach,” he said.
