Worker loses Dh1.7 million to 2 robbers

DUBAI: Two men, posing as members of the Interpol, robbed a company worker of Dh1.7 million.

The two men have been arrested and are currently standing trial before the Dubai Court of First Instance, according to media reports.

The robbery was reported at the Naif police station last May 26. The 33-year-old victim, a worker of a trading company, narrated during investigation that he was in his workplace in Bani Yas when the two suspects arrived. The suspects posed as police officers with one of them showing papers issued to them by United Nations.

“He claimed they worked for the Interpol,” news reports quoted the worker as saying. The victim, who at the time was carrying Dh1.7 million owned by the company, was then told get in their car. While inside the car, the victim was told not to use his mobile phone though he managed to send a message to his colleague

Reports said the victim was brought to Abu Dhabi, where  the suspects took the money and, along with a fifth cohort, divided the money among themselves.

 One of the suspects was arrested while driving back to Dubai after dropping one of his accomplices in the Capital.

Police said they were able to track down the suspects after the victim’s co-worker sought help. Police said the arrested suspects admitted they planned the robbery in a meeting in Al Quoz. Police recovered some of the stolen cash from the two suspects. One of the suspects was high on drugs during the incident, police said. (Calvin Caguiwa)
