Slovakia PM vows justice for OFW beaten to death

The Slovak government has assured the Philippine government that justice will be served to an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who died after being mauled and beaten in the European country.

Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini told daily newspaper Dennik N that justice needs to be served for OFW Henry John Acorda immediately, reported The Slovak Spectator.

“I hope we will not witness a situation where there will be no effective ruling one year from now,” Pellegrini said.

Foreign affairs secretary Alan Peter Cayetano extended his appreciation towards Pellegrini for acting with urgency to help solve the case.

“The Philippines expresses its appreciation to Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini for assuring us that justice will be served for the death of our kababayan Henry John Acorda,” Cayetano said in a statement.

The Department of Foreign Affairs secretary also expressed his appreciation of the Slovaks’ support following Acorda’s death.

Several gatherings were held in Slovakia to commemorate the OFW’s life and call for justice for his death.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Ma. Cleofe Natividad personally visited Acorda’s family in Bratislava, Slovakia to extend the government’s condolences.

Natividad promised assistance to the family, including the hiring of lawyers who will take over Acorda’s case and the repatriation of his remains.

Acorda was beaten to death by suspect Juraj Hossu at Business Street in downtown Bratislava, Slovakia, in the early hours of May 26.

The Filipino was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on May 31, five days after the incident, at the University Hospital Ruźjnov after sustaining fatal injuries.
The suspect is currently facing manslaughter charges.

Under the Slovak Penal Code, manslaughter is punishable by seven to 12 years in prison.

Acorda’s family, however, continues to appeal to court to elevate the charges to murder.
