‘Martial law on Sept. 21 a remote possibility’, says Lorenzana

Amid reports that President Rodrigo Duterte is gearing towards nationwide martial law declaration, Department of National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana remained firm that such move is on a “remote possibility”.

Duterte earlier warned that he might declare martial law if communist rebels stage massive demonstration.

At a press conference on Sept. 15, Lorenzana said, however, that Duterte was just “very concerned” that communists’ massive protests on September 21 “might get out of hand”.

“Sabi niya (Duterte), ‘I might declare martial law,” Lorenzana told reporters. “Sa aking pananaw naman, very remote naman mangyari.”

He added, “I don’t think [the left] will be able to conduct a massive demonstration across the country that could disrupt the civil government or the lives of the people.”

Lorenzana’s statement came after various left groups announced plans to hold a massive demonstration on September 21, the 45th anniversary of the declaration of martial law in the country, to condemn alleged police abuses, extrajudicial killings, and bloody war on drugs.
