UAE-based OFWs receive TESDA certification

Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Abu Dhabi and Dubai were among the 2,800 individuals who benefitted from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA)’s services and programs during the first half of 2017.

According to TESDA, the establishment of its main and regional websites have allowed more Filipinos in the Philippines and abroad to apply for online scholarship application.

As of June 2017, TESDA received more than 2,800 Filipinos who have submitted application for training and scholarships.

TESDA conducted onsite assessment and certification in five Middle East countries namely Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Jeddah, Riyadh, and Al Khobar.

Among the 317 applications, 252 were able to secure National Certificates (NC), which could serve as ticket to better opportunities and higher paying jobs.

Active OFWs and their dependents can apply for Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Skills for Employment Scholarship Program (SESP) to obtain NC I or NC II, a common requirement for skill-oriented local and overseas jobs.

Under the program, successful applicants can receive up to P14,500 (Dh1,049) training fee assistance, the OWWA website showed.

(OFW) or their dependents who wish to pursue technical vocational course may apply for a training assistance program from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

OWWA’s Tech-Voc Scholarship for OFWs, dependents

(Report via owwa.gov.ph)

The OWWA Skills for Employment Scholarship Program (SESP) is extended to OFWs, who are active OWWA members, or their dependents, to defray them with the expenses of taking up any tech-voc course accredited by TESDA in any training course within their respective region.

Completion of any TESDA-accredited short term course will merit a graduate with a National Certificate II (NC I or NCII), which is a common requirement for skill-oriented local and overseas jobs.

Under the scholarship, the applicant is granted to the actual cost of training fee, with a maximum of P14,500. In the event the training fee for the applicant’s chosen course is above the said amount, the applicant shall bear the excess cost.

Apart from tech-voc courses, the SESP also applies for any TESDA-accredited ladderized baccalaureate degrees. Some of the degrees with ladderized system are BS Information Technology, BS Computer Science, BS Hotel and Restaurant Management, and BS Tourism. The same maximum assistance of P14,500 applies.

The scholarship is open to OFWs who return to the country with valid OWWA membership. If the OFW is abroad, the scholarship is also extended to the OFW’s qualified dependents: spouse or child for married OFWs; or single sibling for single OFWs. OFW child should also be 21 years old or below by the time of application.

General requirement for the application to the program is a valid OWWA membership of the OFW; photocopy of OFW’s passport; high school or college diploma; and, birth certificate or any proof of relationship to the OFW. For single applicants, Certificate of No Marriage issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority is also required.

  1. “TESDA conducted onsite assessment and certification in five Middle East countries namely Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Jeddah, Riyadh, and Al Khobar.” – These are not countries rather they are emirates and cities in UAE and Saudi Arabia respectively. It means, certification was made in TWO countries only.
