Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been transferred to intensive care in hospital after his coronavirus disease (COVID-19) symptoms “worsened”, BBC reported Downing Street as saying.
The 55-year-old British prime minister was admitted to hospital on Sunday in London due to “persistent symptoms” including a high fever.
In a statement released by Number 10 Downing Street, residence and office of the Prime Minister, “Over the course of [Monday] afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital.”
BBC reported that he was given oxygen late on Monday afternoon, before being taken to intensive care.
Officials stressed that this was not an emergency admission, and that Johnson will remain in charge of government.
According to Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth is in the loop about Johnson’s health.
Johnson’s hospitalization came after the Department of Health announced that COVID-19-related deaths at 4,934 people as of Saturday.
COVID-19 has reached some of the highest levels of government in several countries such as the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Iran and the Philippines.
