For the first time, South Korea reported more recoveries than confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an indication that the outbreak is slowing down in Asia’s biggest epidemic outside mainland China.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) recorded Friday 110 new cases of COVID-19 in contrast with 177 patients who recovered from the disease.
The total number of infected cases in the East Asian Country is at 7,979 as of this writing.
The latest figures manifest a downward trend in the outbreak that emerged in the country on January 20.
Despite the ray of hope, authorities remain vigilant as new clusters of infections emerged in Seoul and in the city of Sejong.
“We’ve managed to turn the corner, but there are concerns about overseas inflows, as well as possible infections at home around such facilities as call centers, computer cafes, and karaoke rooms,” Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said.
Daegu City, the epicenter of the outbreak, accounts for 61 cases of the latest tally, while 17 and 13 cases were recorded in Sejong and Seoul respectively.
