House of Representatives formally begins ABS-CBN franchise proceedings

The House Committee on Legislative Franchises will now begin the proceedings for the franchise renewal bid of television giant ABS-CBN.
House committee vice-chairperson and Isabela Rep. Tonypet Albano told CNN Philippines that lawmakers will now weigh in on the merits and complaints on the franchise bid of the media giant.
“This is a formality in such a way that there is a calendar for us to meet. All formal complaints will now be formally studied upon and looked upon,” Albano said in a CNN Philippines interview.
The lawmaker however clarified that there is no guarantee that the franchise can be given to the network before it expires in March 2020.
House committee chairman and Palawan representative Franz Alvarez also said that the hearing may officially start in May or in August.
There are now 11 pending bills at the lower house seeking to renew the ABS-CBN franchise.
