UAE court fines man Dh50,000 for selling Wi-Fi connection

Umm Al Quwain Misdemeanour Court has fined an Asian expat of Dh50,000 after he was found selling his Wi-Fi connection to his neighbors.

In a report by Khaleej Times, records showed that the defendant had installed a booster for his internet connection.
This allowed him to illegally sell his Wi-Fi service to other residents in the area where he used to live.
The man was caught last December and a complaint has been filed by an anti-fraud coordinator of a telecommunications service provider.
The defendant admitted the crime.
Selling Wi-Fi connection is against UAE law under Federal Decree No 3/2003, which was later on amended by Federal Decree No 5/2008.

Under the Telecoms Law it is prohibited to use, sell, offer for sale or connect to any public telecommunications network in the UAE any telecommunications terminal equipment that has not been type approved by the TRA.
