A total of 300 Filipino public school teachers will undergo training so they can teach Mandarin.
The Department of Education (DepEd) has recently partnered with the Confucius Institute for the training of the said teachers following the signing of the memorandum of agreement for Master of Arts in Education, Major in Chinese Language Teaching (MAEd CLT), says a report by Philippine Star.
According to the same report, the program aims to support the sustainable development of the Special Program in Foreign Language (SPFL) – Chinese Mandarin in public secondary schools.
It targets to upskill 300 teachers in the next five years. The Angeles University Foundation of the Philippines and Fujian Normal University of China will implement this.
SPFL teachers undergo a two-year master’s degree program that will include studying in China for six months.
This is not the first time that this happened, as there were already 310 Filipino teachers who were trained to teach Chinese Mandarin back in 2011.
Under the SPFL program, DepEd says there were 11,000 students from 93 public high schools that have studied Chinese Mandarin. Other languages being taught in select public schools through the SPFL include German, Spanish, French, Korean, and Nihongo.
