New York may soon ban doctors from conducting so-called virginity tests following the controversy involving rapper T.I. who recently created a stir on social media following admission that he has a gynecologist checking his daughter’s hymen annually.
Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages proposed a bill banning medical professionals for doing such tests.
The Democrat said the bill would consider conducting such test a sexual assault outside of medical setting.
“It’s medically unnecessary. It’s often painful, humiliating, traumatic. All in all, it’s a form of violence against women,” she said.
The World Health Organization has called for an end on the tests last year. The organization said that the test involves inspecting hymen by inserting fingers to the vagina.
