Filipina scientist Jenny Anne Barretto has been recognized for discovering what could possibly be the world’s largest caldera.
A caldera is a large volcanic crater formed by the collapse of a volcano.
Barretto is a New Zealand-based marine geophysicist, has described the existence of whatnis labeled as ‘Apolaki Caldera’ in Benham Rise.
Barretto’s paper, “Benham Rise unveiled: Morphology and structure of an Eocene large igneous province in the West Philippine Basin,” described the area as a large oceanic large igneous province at the western margin of the Philippine Sea.”
Barretto’s paper said that Apolaki Caldera yas a diameter of 150 kilometers.
Apolaki Caldera’s size is more than twice the Yellowstone, tagged as the world’s largest caldera.
“The crest of the rise has the morphology of a caldera with a diameter of ~150 km,” Barretto’s paper said.
Apolaki means giant lord in Filipino mythology. He is also described as the god of sun and war.
