A boat was seized while 12 Filipinos were arrested on suspicion that they were involved in a fuel-smuggling ring.
The arrest was made off Strait of Hormuz in Tehran, news agency Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) reported.
The coast guard chief in the southern province of Hormozgan told ISNA that 283,900 litres (75,000 gallons) of petrol worth 233.71 billion rials ($20.2 million) were confiscated from the tugboat.
Major Hossein Dehaki was quoted in the report as saying: “Twelve Philippine nationals were arrested and the relevant judiciary officials are currently taking the required legal measures.”
According to Dehaki, the group was suspected of operating a fuel-smuggling ring.
The seized shipment was intercepted close to Sirik county in the Strait of Hormuz. Dehaki said.
