Duterte signs ‘Murang Kuryente Law’

President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a measure reducing electricity rates, the “Murang Kuryente Law.”

Under the new statute, government share from Malampaya Natural Gas project in Palawan amounting to Php208 billion will be used to pay the debts to National Power Corp. (NAPOCOR).

This means Napocor will no longer pass on the rates for stranded contract costs and stranded debts to the consumers.

Once implemented, a household consuming 200 kilowatts per hour every month can save Php172.

Duterte also signed the Anti-Obstruction Power Lines Act.

The law hopes to keep all power line corridors free of any obstructions that may disrupt the supply of electricity from power plants to consumers.

Planting tall trees and hazardous activities near the power line corridors will be prohibited.

“The measure is timely for the rainy season when powerful typhoons barrel through our country,” Sen. Win Gatchalian said in a statement.
