The Saudi Council of Engineers has seized more than 3,000 fake or forged engineering certificates issued, Saudi Gazette reported.
According to Saad Al-Shahrani, chairman of the Saudi Council of Engineers’ board of directors, some 2,288 of the certificates were fake while 712 were forged.
Al Shahrani added that majority of these bogus certificates were from expatriates working for the private sector. “Only a very few number of Saudis possessed bogus engineering degrees,” he said.
Punishment for expatriates who are caught with forged or fake degrees include imprisonment and deportation.
The council has an ongoing campaign against fake engineering certificates in partnership with Saudi’s public security, passport police and other control and supervisory bodies.
Contacts with a number of universities around the world are maintained by the council to verify the authenticity of expats’ certificates.
