A few days before the midterm elections, candidates have campaigned double time amidst heavy downpour and floods in many parts of the Philippines.
Even before a tropical depression could enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility, downpour caused floods in many parts of Metro Manila Wednesday evening, causing traffic congestion and leaving hundreds of commuters stranded.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Wednesday night’s downpour was a sign that summer would end soon.
But rains and floods did not stop candidates from going to many places to woo voters in the final days of the campaign.
The sortie of the opposition’s senatorial slate Otso Diretso pushed through at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City. Vice President Leni Robredo and Senators Francis Pangilinan, Risa Hontiveros, Franklin Drilon, and Antonio Trillanes IV joined the campaign.
Meanwhile, the Duterte administration’s senatorial candidates were seen in different provinces.
Re-electionist Senator Sonny Angara wooed voters in General Santos, former Philippine National Police director-general Ronald dela Rosa and Francis Tolentino campaigned in Iloilo, Bong Revilla was in La Union, and former Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go was in Pampanga.
Other candidates were also seen in other places.
Grace Poe was in miting de avance in Pangasinan. Meanwhile, Freddie Aguilar campaigned in Olongapo, Juan Ponce Enrile was in Cavite, and Lito Lapid held a motorcade in Pampanga.
In the final days of the campaign, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol and the provinces of Isabela and Cagayan would experience thunderstorms, while the rest of the Philippines would have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rains, PAGASA said.
