Man faces trial for smuggling illegal items into prison

A man who works as a nurse at a prison in Sharjah is facing trial for trying to smuggle banned materials to the penal and correctional institution in exchange for Dh100.

It was not disclosed what the illegal item was.

The Sharjah Criminal Court charged the 51-year-old Filipino man (identity withheld in media reports) after he reportedly took advantage of his job at the prison to smuggle illegal items and bring them to the cell of a certain inmate.

The team of inspectors found the items in his possession as he was about to enter the detention center.

During interrogation, authorities found out that the defendant agreed to smuggle the said items in exchange for Dh100.

However, the Filipino nurse denied the charges against him.

The accused is currently held in jail while the prosecution requested for his conviction.

The case was postponed until April 21 to hear the witnesses’ statements.
