Filipina in Indonesia death row for drug-related case

Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Leehiong Wee said in a press conference on Wednesday, Oct. 10, that another Filipino is in death row for a drug-related case.

Wee did not disclose further details and identity of the Filipina, although he assured that the Philippine government is looking into the case to provide her with all necessary assistance.

The ambassador likened the Filipina’s case to that of Mary Jane Veloso who was apprehended for unknowingly bringing over two kilograms of heroin inside her luggage in 2010.

Veloso’s death sentence was put on hold in April 2015 after then-president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino’s plea to Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

The ambassador said that he will be visiting Veloso and the other convicted Filipina in Semarang.

“They are part of the Filipino community here. All Filipinos need to be taken care of,” Wee said.
