UAE police nab WhatsApp gang

Eight people were arrested by the Economic Crimes Unit of the Dubai Police in an operation in Ajman.

Along with the Ajman Police, the authorities have confiscated around Dh23,000 and 26 cell phones.

The modus operandi of the gang is scamming the customers of a supermarket chain by claiming they have won a prize.

Brigadier General Mohammed Rashid bin Sari Al Muhairi, Director of the General Department of Investigations and Criminal Investigations, said that an Arab citizen reported that he had received a message on WhatsApp saying that he had won 200,000 dirhams from a supermarket. He was instructed to give his credit card account including the secret code.

The police also cited a previous case where a woman had given the gang all her information and was surprised to lose Dh7,000 worth of transactions from her credit card. When she could not call back the number, she reported it to the police.

The Ajman Police raided a run-down house that serves as the headquarters of the suspects and found out that the gang have been recruiting Asians with visit visas, reported Ajman News.
