Thieves get jail time for chilli attack in Dubai

Two gang members accused of splashing their victim with ‘chilli and water solution’ to steal Dhs200,000 have finally been locked up with one year prison term in Dubai.

The culprits, a 34-year-old unemployed Asian man and a 37-year-old male companion, along with an unidentified accomplice, assaulted a 38-year-old Indian employee on a parking lot in Meena Bazaar on July 31, 2017.

Their weapon of choice—a squirt of water with chilli to the victim’s face—caused a burning sensation that allowed them to snatch the plastic bag containing the money, reported The Gulf Today.

The victim recounted, “I lost vision…I suppose the gang members had dissolved chilli in the water…Another person whom I was not able to see snatched the plastic bag from me. They fled.”

The thieves then handed Dhs150, 000 to a driver, instructing him to wire the money abroad. The driver pleaded innocent, saying he was not told that the money was stolen. Though he eventually surrendered the amount to the Criminal Investigations Department, he was still referred to the Misdemeanours Court.

During interrogation, the gang members eventually pleaded guilty to the crime and confessed to having a third accomplice. Police are now on the hunt for the fugitive.
