In an attempt to shut up gossipers from spreading malicious stories and wild speculations in the community, a barangay in Pangasinan has implemented an “anti-tsismis” ordinance.
The ordinance, bans and penalizes residents of Barangay Capas in Binalonan, Pangasinan who engage in spreading rumors against someone in the community.
“Here in the Philippines, we are aware that issues created by gossipers or intriguers cause fight among friends, relatives or neighbors,” The Philippine Star quoted Barangay Captain Danilo Tabucol Sr. as saying.
Among the common topics of gossip in the barangay are infidelity and rumors of engaging in witchcraft or being a “mangkukulam’.
“Parang minsan, naiinggit. Nagtsitsismis, hindi maganda ang nasasabi,” a resident said.
The barangay, which has a population of about 4,000, first implemented the ordinance in the final quarter of 2016.
Those proven to be gossipers are required to do community service and fined P300, P500, P,1000 for the first, second, and third offenses, respectively.
