UST law student dies from hazing

A 22-year-old law student of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) was found dead on for undergoing hazing rituals.

The body was identified as Horacio Tomas Castillo III, a freshman law student in UST.

According to the reports, a bystander in Balut, Tondo found Castillo’s bloated body lying on a pavement, wrapped in a thick blanket.

The bystander and several others brought the law student’s body at Chinese General Hospital. Castillo was declared dead on arrival.

Police spot report indicated that Castillo’s body was covered in bruises, particularly on both upper arms. The entire body also sustained several marks of candle wax strips.

Castillo’s father, Horacio Castillo Jr, said their son told them that he will stay overnight at UST on September 16 for the welcoming rites of a recognized law school-based fraternity called Aegis Juris Fraternity.

But his son did not return the following day.

He and his wife said an unidentified number texted them on September 18 early morning to inform that their son was brought to the Chinese General Hospital.

However, when they arrived at the hospital, the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) informed them that their son’s body was taken to the Arcangel Funeral Homes in Sampaloc Manila.

Manila Police District medico-legal doctor has concluded in their autopsy that Castillo III died from massive heart attack possibly due to the injuries he suffered from hazing.
