RTA installs smart taximeters in 10,500 Dubai taxis

All taxis in Dubai will be fitted with high-tech meters that will provide more efficient taxi service for passengers by the end of June 2018, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Tuesday.

The smart meters will be installed in more than 10,500 taxis in Dubai. One of its features is the Dubai Geographic Addressing System (Makani), which accurately locates passengers’ destinations through the unique Makani address signs allotted for every building in the emirate.

The meter is linked to an ‘aman’ or safety system that monitors the speed of taxis on the road.

Optical sensors are also connected to the meter that detect the boarding of passengers, automatically switching the meter on.

Another feature of the Dh68.8 million system is the automated calculation and addition of the toll tariff to the taxi bill whenever the taxi passes through a toll gate.

Dubai drivers can also catch their breath after countless fetches with the ‘Out of Service’ option, giving them a 90-minute flexible break per shift.

The smart taxi meter will also display an “End of Shift” message to inform commuters that the taxi driver cannot be hailed during the last 45 minutes of his shift to ease the handover of the vehicle to his partner.

RTA would continue upgrading the taxi services with smart systems and high-end technology to meet customer needs, The National quoted Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the board of executive directors of RTA, as saying.
