Thinking you look worse than you do? Science says breakup might change your perception about yourself. So get over it quickly because stress can take it toll on your skin.
Breakups can be bad not only for your emotional wellbeing but for yout skin too. Why? Science says stress mixed with an unhealthy diet makes your skin break out.
“I frequently see patients who break out from breakups,” New York City dermatologist/psychologist Dr. Amy Wechsler, as quoted by Elizabeth Denton’s report, said this is quite common.
That’s because stress has been proven to make acne worse, so Dr. Weschler treats the acne plus the stressor, in this case, a breakup.
“Elevated cortisol levels from stress cause inflammation in the skin, and this causes breakouts,” the doctor explained
Here are some things that can happen to your skin when you’re dealing with a romantic split:

1. Junk food binge causes it all
That sugar from the ice cream and doughnuts you’ve been downing, along with the simple carbs from the pizza, are bad for your complexion. Your youthful collagen breakdown and get stiff and eventually this can cause premature fine lines and acne. Have a salad with your pizza so you can control your portions.
2. Your skin becomes super-sensitive
Dermatologist Debra Luftman explains that extra stress increases adrenaline on high alert and that leads to inflammation and skin reacts to that. Meditate or do some breathing exercises to calm down and get as zen as you can. Because when you calm down, you skin can, too.
3. Your pores can become clogged
When you’re stressed, your skin cell turnover goes into slo-mo, so you get more blackheads and breakouts. You can’t control everything in life, but you can control how you react to it. So stick to your face cleaning routine and do what you can to help your skin get through this breakup.
4. You skin can become blotchy, dry, and dull
When you’re stressed out for a long time, it affects your skin barrier. So until things get back to normal, give your skin the moisture it needs in a lightweight lotion, so it can be calm and happy.
