Sen. Francis Escudero said he attended the Senate plenary session on June 3 to help establish a quorum, arguing that the chamber could no longer continue without holding sessions.
Speaking on his podcast, Escudero said the Constitution does not allow the Senate to adjourn for more than three days without obtaining the consent of the House of Representatives.
“Hindi puwede magpatuloy na walang sesyon ang Senado,” Escudero said as he explained his decision to appear during the session amid the ongoing leadership dispute in the chamber.
The senator acknowledged that some may criticize his move or view it as siding with a particular faction, but he said his decision was guided by what he believed was best for the institution.
Escudero said he could not make decisions based on fear of criticism and instead chose to do what he considered right under the circumstances.
His appearance at the June 3 session contributed to the formation of a quorum, allowing the Senate to proceed with its proceedings amid the continuing leadership row.
