The United Arab Emirates and the Philippines are working together on concrete measures aimed at strengthening healthcare protection for overseas Filipino workers stationed in the UAE.
Officials from both countries are targeting the creation of a formal system that would allow OFWs to access check-ups and medical treatment through the national insurance systems of both the UAE and the Philippines.
The discussions also highlighted the need for stronger health education campaigns for Filipino workers abroad, particularly on preventing illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes, which are often neglected by OFWs while working overseas.
UAE Assistant Minister for Medical Affairs and Life Science Dr. Maha Barakat personally recognized the efforts of Health Secretary Ted Herbosa in promoting the welfare and healthcare protection of Filipinos working in the UAE.
According to Dr. Barakat, Filipino healthcare workers are “world class” and should be a source of pride for the Philippines.
She added that both the UAE and the Philippines share the responsibility of protecting Filipino workers because of their major role in the global healthcare workforce.
The discussions took place on the sidelines of the 79th World Health Assembly as both governments continued efforts to strengthen cooperation on healthcare and migrant worker welfare.
