The Ministry of Health and Prevention in the United Arab Emirates has taken a proactive measure in promoting a smoke-free society by introducing a comprehensive guide for creating tobacco-free workplaces. This initiative aims to safeguard the community from the health risks linked to smoking and enhance the overall well-being of employees in their work environments.
Included in the guide are instructions for managers and employees on procedures for handling violations and providing steps to help employees quit smoking.
HE Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, the Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector, stated in a press briefing: “MoHAP’s Tobacco-Free Workplace Guide will be used as a key resource and tool to assist both government and private entities in fostering a workplace free from the use of all tobacco products.”
“It also comes in line with the UAE‘s commitment to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), ratified in 2005, aiming to implement effective measures that protect against exposure to tobacco smoke in workplaces, public transportation, and public places,” he added.

It can be recalled that back in 2009, the UAE also issued Federal Law No. 15 on Combating Tobacco which prohibits smoking on modes of public transport and public closed places. Other prohibitions also include: sale of tobacco products to those under 18, smoking when a child under 12 years old is present; smoking in places of worship, educational institutions, and many more.
