Abu Dhabi Police has issued a reminder to drivers, urging them to remain in the appropriate lanes and avoid obstructing traffic by driving too slowly in fast lanes, a behavior that can lead to accidents and confusion.
With the latest minimum speed restriction being enforced by the Abu Dhabi Police on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road, motorists will be required to maintain a minimum speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) on the first two lanes from the left side of the road.
However, the maximum speed limit will be 140 kph. Heavy vehicles, on the other hand, will be required to adhere to a maximum speed limit of 140 kph on the third and last lanes. The minimum speed limit will not be applicable to them.
According to authorities, a fine of AED400 will be given to motorists who do not give way to vehicles that have priority from behind or from the overtaking lane.
Moreover, it’s worth noting that tailgating is also considered an offense and can result in a AED400 fine as well. Additionally, Abu Dhabi utilizes radars to enforce this regulation, penalizing both the vehicle in front and the one tailgating, with the trailing vehicle incurring four black points on their driving record.
The introduction of the minimum speed limit is part of the UAE’s proactive measures to reduce the number of accidents caused by slow-moving vehicles. It is also in line with the country’s overall mission to prioritize road safety and reduce fatalities caused by road accidents.
